Fort Collins Utilities Administration Building

CLIENT: City of fort collins Utilities

Location: fort collins, co

PROJECT SIZE: 32,500 sf

Project Role: lead project Designer and project architect

certification: leed v.4 Platinum

As one of the initial phases of the city of Fort Collins Climate Action Plan (CAP) to target carbon neutrality by 2050, the Utilities Administration Building stands as a model for high performance design that is attainable at a market-rate budget. The UAB grew out of a planning process that re-visioned the city’s civic center as a zero-energy district within downtown Fort Collins and sets the bar for future civic facility development.

Our project team began with designing the city’s new utilities administration building to not only support the CAP, but also provide district-scale net positive energy, and sustain healthy, productive occupants. As the provider of the city utilities, a main driver for the project was to showcase their commitment to energy efficiency and stewardship of the environment and resources.

We focused on developing the perfect combination of building system technologies for this project. Remaining budget-conscious, we applied innovative solutions to the exterior walls that resulted in a reduction of energy use and provides abundant daylight and thermal comfort for its occupants. This project is the first city building (and fourth building of any type) in the world to achieve LEED v4 Platinum certification.
